Life on a campaign trail trying to get elected has it moments.
Yesterday for instance, there were several dogs on the other side of doors, which were seriously attempting to treat my fingers as though they were pedigree chum, and my leaflet. Thankfully, I have lost no fingers.
Then there’s the sadist out there. I mean it, a real sadist, one who designed and placed door letterboxes at the bottom, meaning the amount of bending one has to do, does lead to muscles being used which haven’t been used in a while.
Also today, I had a man chase me down the street, waving other candidates leaflets, shouting “you’re all the f*ck*ng same, robbing b*st*rds.”. Another point blank told me to “f*ck *ff with that cr*p” and a third said he wasn’t interested and wasn’t going to vote. I reminded him that many perished to preserve democracy, possibly his grandfather and other relations, just like mine did, and that it would be a waste not to vote. I don’t know if it sunk in, or if he’ll even vote, but I needed to say that, because that’s one of things my grandad fought for, democracy, all those years ago.
On Wednesday of last week, I got roped into hanging baskets outdoors for some pensioners. And if that wasn’t enough, two individuals at two different doors answered their doors in their birthday suits; which to say the least was different. And something rarer than a full planetary alignment happened too… I was asked out on a date. Yes really!
The reception I’ve received from residents in my ward, Folkestone Central, where I am standing as a candidate, has in the main been affable and friendly. Many have given me their time to listen to the solutions I have to change their lives. For this I am truly grateful.
After 7 leaflet drops, I have taken 73,641 steps, or walked the equivalent of 34 miles, and lost 12 pounds.
If I am out and about delivering leaflets, please do say hello. And if you’re at home, please don’t answer your door in your birthday suit.
And finally, I have to say thank you to Mike & Vic for the lovely cup of tea, and use of their loo. And a big thank you to Elizabeth for helping me up, when I slipped on her wet floor.
