“I’ve seen the future and it is murder”

Last night the Labour Party voted to cut the winter fuel payment. One of the those Labour members to do so, was Folkestone & Hythe MP Tony Vaughan (pictured)

As matters stand, the annual payment to pensioners in England and Wales of £200 or £300, depending on age, reached 10.8 million people last year. It will now only be received by about 1.5 million people, those who get income-related benefits such as pension credit.

The Office of National Statistics publish data on: Climate-related mortality, England and Wales: 1988 to 2022; which give the relative risk of death associated with temperature for England and Wales from 1988 to 2022.

The ONS data can be found here

The graph shows between 1988 – 2022, more people died each year in cold weather than hot.

In excess of 175,000 have died during cold weather, and over 48,000 died during hot weather.

The data show your three times more likely to die in cold weather than hot.

What don’t Labour understand about the ONS data.

Do they really want more pensioners to die from cold, as they surely will with their winter fuel allowance cut.
