Official figures expose widening gap in road deaths and injuries between poor and wealthy postcodes across Kent & Medway. Children living in some of Kent’s poorest communities account for a sharply disproportionate share of recorded pedestrian casualties, analysis of Department for Transport data has found.
Across England, 21.2% of pedestrians aged 16 or under who were killed or injured between 2021 and 2025 lived in the poorest 10% of neighbourhoods. Just 4.6% lived in the wealthiest 10%—a gap of 4.62 to one. These figures cover all reported casualties: fatal, serious and slight.
The Shepway Vox Team reproduced the national calculation and matched the published home areas of child casualties to Kent’s 12 districts and Medway. This identified 829 records across the county.
Medway had the largest five-year total, with 162 child pedestrian casualties, followed by Thanet with 91, Maidstone with 73, Swale with 70 and Dartford with 64. Folkestone and Hythe recorded 43—the same number as Dover and Tonbridge and Malling.
But the raw totals only tell part of the story.
In Folkestone and Hythe, 27 of the 43 casualties—62.8%—lived in neighbourhoods ranked among the poorest 30% in England. Just three, or 7%, lived in the wealthiest 30%. That is a nine-to-one divide.
The pattern was even more pronounced in Thanet, where 53 of 91 casualties lived in the poorest 30% of neighbourhoods, compared with five from the wealthiest 30%.
Medway recorded 89 casualties from the poorest 30%, against 20 from the wealthiest areas. In Swale, the comparison was 33 against six.
The picture was reversed in some wealthier parts of Kent. Sevenoaks recorded two casualties from neighbourhoods in the poorest 30%, compared with 15 from the wealthiest 30%. Tonbridge and Malling recorded eight against 18.
These figures should not be read as casualty rates. They do not adjust for the number of children living in each neighbourhood, how often they walk, traffic levels or differences in road use. Wealthier districts may also contain few neighbourhoods ranked among England’s poorest areas.
The council shown is based on where the child lived, not necessarily where the collision happened. A further 962 English records had a valid deprivation ranking but no usable published home-area code, meaning they could not be allocated to a council.
Even with those limitations, the Kent figures reveal a clear pattern: recorded child pedestrian casualties are heavily concentrated among children living in some of the county’s poorer communities.
