Breaking News: The Owners of the Grand put into Administration

At 17.15 this afternoon, in the High Court in London, the Honourable Mr Justice Snowden (pictured), put Hallam Estates Ltd, owners of the Grand since 1996 into administration.

This decision was reached after an application from the Tribunal-appointed Manager of the Grand responsible for the residential areas, Mrs Alison Mooney. She was seeking recovery of over £120,000 of unpaid service charges and court costs run up by Hallam since January 2019. The loss of these funds, it was alleged, have left the maintenance account in great difficulties when added to the unpaid service charges of Mr and Mrs Michael Stainer, former owners of 19 flats in the Grand, totalling over £320,000.

The Insolvency Act 1986 explains the purpose of administration, and the responsibility of an administrator are:

  • Rescuing the company as a going concern, or

  • Achieving a better result for the company’s creditors as a whole than would be likely if the company were wound up (without first being in administration), or

  • Realising property in order to make a distribution to one or more secured or preferential creditors

The decision is in effect saying to the current director Mr Robert Moss (below left), and his self-styled “consultant”, (his words not ours), Michael Stainer (below right), that they cannot be entrusted to carry out this function so we are appointing a professional company, in this case Begbies Traynor to do this.

The administrator is a very powerful animal and his rights, powers and duties are set out in The Insolvency Act 1986.

In everyday language an insolvency Administrator has the power to:

  • dismiss directors, managers and employees

  • close down outlets

  • negotiate the sale of the business of the company

  • put forward re-structuring proposals to creditors

  1. Local Journalism at it best, well done to all involved.

  2. A resident of the Grand // December 17, 2020 at 23:30 // Reply

Let’s see how long it takes the other local media to wake up and smell the coffee…….

  3. So what happens to all the lovely honest hard working staff that work there .Has anyone thought of them .Nope not a jot

    • The responsibility of the staff remain with Robert Moss until removed by Begbies Traynor, the administrator.

As Mr Stainer, Mr Moss and Robert Richardson have been directors of the companies at the Grand, you should ask them why the bills weren’t paid. Full responsibility lies with them.

Staff who are understandably worried about their position should contact Mr Moss as director, or contact the administrators appointed by the court, Begbies Traynor at their Maidstone office, 01622 619821. Bear in mind, they have to make their own urgent enquiries about which companies actually are the employers — probably not Hallam — so might not have a quick answer.

  5. Spreading joy as usual I see, no thought for the honest and genuine employees who have only believed in the business and the valued clients. Instead you seek joy and ‘happiness ‘ in deliberate harm of the reputation of the hotel side. If you were such HONEST reporters, you’d at the very least report the facts thereby ensuring that people understand the difference between the commercial arm and the private residential section. At least be transparent about the fact that you ARE a resident and have a personal vendetta against the Stainers. Instead you relish in creating negativity whilst people are sitting at home desperate to go back to work. Shame on you and your ‘honest’ representation of the news.

    • All the responsibility for this sorry mess belongs to Michael Stainer, Robert Moss and Robert Richardson. That is documented in court case after court case.

The Stainers used their flats as holiday lets in breach of their mortgage and the lease. Plus the flats have long belonged to the Trustee in Insolvency and been used unlawfully for quite sometime.

The Courts have made it clear the responsibility for this sorry mess, belongs to the Stainers for NOT paying what they owe, to HMRC and the Residents

It is Mr Moss as a Director until the Administrator removes him from office, who employees of the Grand should be talking to, if Mr Moss will not engage and participate in dialogue with you, we would strongly recommend all employees contact the Administrator Begbies Traynor at their Maidstone office, 01622 619821, that way you’ll get the facts, not some cock and bull story.

As we understand, you are NOT employees of Hallam Estates, so should in the short time be protected and get paid. We urge you once gain to contact Begbies Traynor on 1622 619821 or Robert Moss Director of Hallam Estates (for now) on 07377674750, or robmos@aol.com

What is amazing is how there are still some people who would shoot the messenger because they don’t like the message. Maybe they are members of the Stainer walks on water brigade. Look at the facts. Read the court orders, Read the evidence. There isn’t a civil court in the land since 1985 that has found in his favour. 28 times since 2014 courts have shown him to be exactly what he is. When it gets really tough, he hides from court, claiming illness, or most recently a serious bowel and bladder condition. The staff at the Grand are great and deserve so much better than to work for this crook.

  7. I suppose those of us who had to go to law to make Stainer and Hallam pay their dues can now expect a tide of abuse and worse. This is so unfair to those who’ve paid 100% of the cost of maintaining this building for years while Stainer ‘earned’ £360,000 per annum from his holiday lets and paid £200,000 a year from this to subsidise his businesses and not a penny to anyone else. This is shown in his ‘sworn’ witness statements to the High Court.

  8. Do Moss and Stainer have a clue as to what’s going on? They are either in denial, absent minded or deliberately flouting the law.

  9. Could someone please water those poor plants in the conservatory? And move them away from the hot sun. I walked past it yesterday, very sad to see.

It wouldn’t take long and there must be people in the building who could do it?
