Cllr Monk’s diary reveals his freemason links.

Hands up those who knew that Parish Cllr, David Monk, and former leader of Folkestone & Hythe District Council is a freemason, as was his wife’s father.

According to his diary while leader of the Council, it shows Cllr Monk attended the United Grand Lodge of England, based at Great Queen Street, London on four known occasions.

His diary also shows he visited Downing Street in March of this year, and many other locations while undertaking his civic duty as Leader of our Council.

While there is no obligation for councillors to declare if they are a Freemason or not, many councillors across the UK have declared membership on their register of interests under fields such as outside bodies, charitable groups or “bodies whose principle purpose is to influence public opinion”.

According to various Masonic website, mason come second in raising money for charity. Only the national lottery beats them. Yes they have funny handshakes to let each other know they belong to the fraternity. Yes they believe in the existence of a Supreme Being and in the immortality of the soul, but they do raise a lot of money for good causes.

Cllr Monk was not the only mason sitting on our Council. On Oct 31 2021, we informed you former Cllr Philip Martin was also a mason

Recently local historian Tony Hill gave a talk at the Folkestone & District Local History Society titled:

Over 300 years of Freemasonry in Folkestone

Cllr Monk’s diary while he was leader of Folkestone & Hythe District Council can be downloaded. It runs between 1 Jan 2020 and the 2 May 2023.

  1. Who?

  2. I don’t understand the point of this story. It’s a bit nothingy.

  3. Id give him a funny hand shake if he could get rid of that eye sore in the Elham Valley under the guise as a campsite ! Or is it perhaps a handshake that was given not to do anything about the braking of Campsite Rules never acted on ….. Now there’s a mystery
