The Environment Agency’s latest assessment has delivered a grim result for Kent: not one classified river stretch passes the chemical-status test. Yet the figures don’t mean every river is equally polluted, freshly tested or immediately dangerous.
Kent’s rivers have been handed a result nobody can dress up. Every classified river water body in the county, including Medway, fails the Environment Agency’s chemical-status test.
The Medway, Darent, Stour, Dour, Beult, Teise, Len, Loose Stream and dozens of smaller tributaries all receive the same blunt verdict: Fail.
Not one achieves “good” chemical status.
That’s serious. But before anyone declares every river in Kent a bubbling toxic soup, it’s worth understanding what the figures actually measure — and what they don’t. England’s entire surface-water network failed the chemical assessment, so Kent isn’t an outlier. It’s part of a nationwide problem involving pollution that can persist for decades.
The Environment Agency gives rivers two separate report cards.
The first is ecological status. This looks at wildlife and the wider health of the river: fish, insects, aquatic plants, oxygen levels, nutrients, water flows and physical damage to the channel.
The second is chemical status. This tests whether specified hazardous substances meet environmental standards. A river can support wildlife reasonably well but still fail chemically because one persistent pollutant exceeds its permitted level.
That’s because the assessment follows the “one out, all out” rule. Every relevant element must meet the required standard. One failure can drag the entire water body down, even where everything else passes.
The national chemical failure is driven heavily by long-lived pollutants including mercury, PFOS — one of the PFAS “forever chemicals” — and PBDE flame retardants. These substances can remain in water, sediment and wildlife long after their original use has stopped.
That explains why Kent’s chemical-status table is so brutally repetitive. From the Upper Darent to the Dour at Dover, and from the Upper Great Stour to the Medway at Maidstone, every listed river stretch receives the same classification.
It doesn’t mean every stretch contains the same chemicals at the same concentrations. Nor does it mean every metre was sampled during 2025. Where no newer monitoring result is available, the Environment Agency may retain the most recent valid classification.
The ecological results provide a better guide to the differences between Kent’s river systems.
In the Darent and Cray management catchment, four of the five classified river bodies are rated moderate and one is poor. None reaches good ecological status.
The Upper Stour catchment fares worse: two river bodies are moderate, one is poor and one is bad.
Across the Eden catchment’s rivers and lakes, eight surface-water bodies are moderate, two are poor and one is bad. Again, none reaches good or high ecological status.
Those ecological failures matter because they point towards more immediate local pressures.
Sewage discharges can reduce oxygen and raise nutrient levels. Agricultural run-off can carry fertilisers, soil and pesticides into streams. Roads and built-up areas produce polluted surface-water run-off. Abstraction can reduce flows, while weirs, culverts and heavily engineered channels can prevent fish moving and destroy natural habitat.
The classification alone doesn’t prove which organisation or industry caused a particular failure. That requires examining the individual river’s failed elements, monitoring evidence and recorded pressures. But it does show that Kent’s problems extend well beyond one water company, one farm or one dramatic pollution incident.
There’s another important warning. The 2025 results shouldn’t simply be placed beside the 2019 figures and treated as a clean trend.
Monitoring locations have changed. Some testing methods have improved. The Environment Agency says apparent changes can result from better evidence or different methods rather than a river suddenly improving or deteriorating.
Nor is chemical status a bathing-water safety test or a drinking-water assessment.
A chemical failure doesn’t automatically establish that swimming, paddling or touching the water presents an immediate health risk. Equally, nobody should take a moderate ecological rating as proof that a river is safe. Those questions require separate monitoring for bacteria, specific chemicals and public-health risks.
So what does the new data tell us?
It tells us chemical contamination is so widespread and persistent that no classified Kent river stretch can pass the current standard. It tells us several Kent catchments are also struggling ecologically, with water bodies rated moderate, poor or bad rather than good. And it shows that the problems are scattered across the county, from chalk streams and rural tributaries to heavily modified urban rivers.
The honest headline isn’t that every Kent river is instantly poisonous.
It’s that decades of chemicals, sewage, agricultural pollution, road run-off, altered flows and damaged habitats have left every classified river failing at least one important test.
That may be less sensational than saying the rivers are toxic. It’s also more troubling, because there’s no single pipe to block or culprit to blame. Kent’s river crisis has been built slowly, from hundreds of pressures.
