Sometimes the most extraordinary stories are buried in the dullest-looking council documents. Halfway down a table of Green Grant awards approved by Folkestone & Hythe District Council on 18 September sits £2,000 for The Folkestone School for Girls, described simply as a “School robotics project aim at aiding Fire Brigade in tackling wildfires”. Behind that single sentence is something rather wonderful: five girls from Folkestone are about to represent Great Britain at one of the biggest international robotics competitions on Earth.
They are Team Meglabyte — Sophia, Talikha, Maddalena, Prakriti and Aarna — and next month they will swap Folkestone for Incheon, Republic of Korea, where they will compete as Team Great Britain at the 2026 FIRST Global Challenge. More than 190 national teams are expected at the Olympics-style robotics competition from 7–10 October, with Incheon estimating around 2,000 young competitors will attend.
And they haven’t simply been handed a Union Jack and told to build something.
Meglabyte is a remarkably young team. FIRST’s official records give 2024 as its rookie year, while the team’s fundraising campaign says Folkestone School for Girls only established its robotics club that year. In March 2026 the girls competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge South East Qualifier at Langley Park School for Boys against 14 other teams. Across five qualification matches, Meglabyte recorded two wins, including an emphatic 210–34 alliance victory in its final match, and the judges awarded the team the Sustain Award.
Korea, however, came through a separate national selection process.
The right to represent Great Britain was open to robotics teams across the country. Folkestone’s girls had to clear a demanding three-part selection process: preparing and submitting a video, producing a portfolio of their work and then facing interviews. A FIRST UK judging panel ultimately selected Meglabyte as the five students who will wear the Team GB colours in Korea. So, in barely two years, they’ve gone from starting a school robotics club, through competitive FIRST robotics, winning an award at their South East tournament and overcoming three national selection hurdles, to representing their country.
That’s some trajectory.
And the challenge awaiting them in Korea couldn’t be more serious. The theme for this year’s FIRST Global Challenge is Igniting Innovation, centred on wildfire prevention, mitigation and recovery. Every national team receives a standardised kit of parts from which it must design, build and programme a robot capable of completing tasks in a simulated wildfire environment. The event takes place at Songdo ConvensiA in Incheon, bringing together teenagers from almost every corner of the world to compete — but also to collaborate — through engineering.
For Team GB, though, the challenge has already moved well beyond a simulated arena.
Alongside their competition robot, the girls have developed The Firebreaker, a separate real-world engineering project for FIRST Global’s New Technology Experience. The premise is beautifully straightforward: instead of asking firefighters to get dangerously close to a rapidly moving wildfire to clear combustible vegetation, why not build a robot capable of doing some of that work for them?
Firebreaker is designed to be remotely operated and compact enough to travel aboard a fire engine. Once deployed, two folding arms extend from either side of its drivetrain. Each arm is formed from three sections, giving the machine a total working span of five metres. Servos operate the extension mechanism, while a series of spade-like plough blades attached to those arms dig into the ground and strip away material capable of feeding an advancing fire.
In other words, it creates a firebreak.
That isn’t some theoretical firefighting idea dreamed up solely for a school competition. Kent firefighters were battling a wildfire at Benenden near Cranbrook on 13 August 2026 when local farmers used machinery to create firebreaks to help stop the flames spreading. Kent Fire and Rescue Service itself reported that seven fire engines and a utility terrain vehicle attended the incident. Firebreaks, made mechanically and quickly enough, can be an important part of containing a wildfire.
What the Folkestone girls are asking is whether a purpose-built robotic machine could do that while putting fewer human beings in harm’s way.
It’s an idea particularly suited to Kent because Kent Fire and Rescue Service is already embracing robotics. Its own tracked firefighting robot entered operational use in 2025 and can carry cameras and thermal equipment, enter hazardous areas and deliver water through a monitor at up to 2,000 litres a minute. It has already been sent into major fires where sending firefighters would expose them to greater risk.
Meglabyte’s project tackles a different problem — physically cutting a path through vegetation — but the philosophy is remarkably similar: send technology towards the danger while keeping people further away from it.
The team hasn’t worked entirely in isolation either. FIRST UK says the girls have visited their local fire station to learn how technology can assist wildfire prevention and firefighting, while their Crowdfunder (please contribute what you can) says they have been developing the Firebreaker concept with their local fire service. FIRST UK also says the team has progressed its thinking from paper to prototype, visited a university robotics department and established links with young people in 16 countries across five continents while preparing for Korea.
Then there’s the £2,000 from Folkestone & Hythe District Council.
The council’s Green Grant Programme is funded from its climate-change reserve, and on 18 September the Leader formally approved the latest round of grants. Among school gardens, recycling projects, rainwater collection and LED lighting sits the Folkestone School for Girls award — £2,000 towards the wildfire robotics project. It’s hardly the largest sum ever handed out by a council, but it is difficult to imagine many £2,000 grants capable of travelling quite so far in ambition.
There has been considerable community backing as well. The team’s Crowdfunder had reached £4,000 from 100 supporters when last captured, with a £25,000 overall target to help meet the costs of travelling to Korea, developing the prototype and undertaking their STEM outreach work. The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust is also listed among the team’s supporters.
And that outreach matters because Meglabyte’s ambitions don’t end when their robot comes out of its transport case.
The girls want to develop robotics kits and lesson plans for primary schools, helping younger children understand how engineering can solve genuine environmental problems. They’re also planning a girls’ STEM event in London. As an all-girls team, they make no secret of wanting more young women to see engineering, coding and robotics as somewhere they belong.
So what exactly can they win in Korea?
There isn’t one single cash jackpot. FIRST Global operates much more like an international sporting championship, with gold, silver and bronze medals and a range of major awards. The highest overall honour is the Albert Einstein Award for FIRST Global International Excellence, given to teams combining outstanding robot performance with engineering, collaboration and the wider values of FIRST Global. The tournament also produces a winning four-country alliance, alongside engineering, documentation, innovation and other awards.
Firebreaker has another prize route altogether. The New Technology Experience runs through three phases: initial submissions, a semifinal stage and then finalists, who present their projects to judges in Incheon. The top three projects receive the FIRST Global Innovator Award, in Honor of Fred Smith. FIRST Global’s published timetable had Phase One submissions due on 3 August, semifinalists announced on 17 August, Phase Two submissions on 7 September and finalists on 14 September, before presentations in Korea on 7 October and the top-three presentations and awards on 10 October. I haven’t found a reliable public announcement establishing that Firebreaker has reached the finalist stage, so we won’t pretend otherwise — getting Team GB to Korea is already an achievement in itself.
Great Britain has pedigree to defend. At the 2024 FIRST Global Challenge in Athens, another all-girls British team, Ultraviolet from Bournemouth School for Girls, made history by winning gold in the Katherine Johnson Award for Engineering Documentation, the UK’s first individual team gold at FIRST Global. They won eight of their 11 matches against a field representing 192 countries. Folkestone’s five now inherit that Team GB shirt.
What happens in Incheon remains to be seen.
But think about what has already happened. A robotics club established in Folkestone in 2024 has, two years later, produced five young engineers selected to represent Great Britain. They’ve competed, won matches, picked up a sustainability award, survived a national selection process, talked to firefighters, connected with students around the world, built robots and devised a machine intended to tackle a real environmental danger.
And somewhere in a Folkestone & Hythe council report, all of that occupies three lines and £2,000.
Sometimes public money funds something mundane.
Sometimes it helps five girls from Folkestone take a robot to Korea and show the world what they can build.
