The Velvet Voices “Romney Marsh” Album: 20+ Musicians, Nine Nationalities, One Love Letter to Romney Marsh

Romney Marsh is often overlooked in the Folkestone & Hythe District Council chamber — but not by The Velvet Voices. Our latest album, Romney Marsh, lands with the scale and energy of a small festival: a remarkable musical coalition spanning nine nationalities and more than 20 musicians, blending seasoned professionals with passionate amateurs. The result is less a “project” and more a patchwork — a record stitched together by neighbours and friends who’ve spent time on Romney Marsh, alongside those who simply can’t resist a song once it starts.

The full album is released tomorrow. For now, here’s a sneak preview.

Marshlight Boogaloo

The title Romney Marsh is an affectionate flag in the ground for every band member who has spent time there and come to appreciate its “three-quarters sky.” The Marsh is a place that feels both vast and intimate: sweeping horizons, winding roads, sudden sea breezes, and villages where craft and community still hold meaning. This album embraces that identity, capturing the rhythms and characters of the area without falling into cliché. The eleven songs flow like the weather: bright, bracing, and at times, unexpectedly tender.

For those who live on Romney Marsh — or return whenever they can — there’s an unmistakable thread of local pride, joy, and memory that runs deep through this beautiful landscape and close-knit community. We, The Velvet Voices, pay tribute to the RNLI volunteers who crew the lifeboats: quiet heroes whose practical courage is as much a part of the Marsh as its shifting tides, carried out with speed and skill. We also tip our hats to the ladies of Newchurch and their legendary jam-making (quite possibly the best in the world). It’s not quaint nostalgia, but a testament to a place that still knows how to craft something with care, by hand, and share it with others.

Ladies of Newchurch

We also weave in the cultural markers that give the Marsh its distinctive character: the eerie “Listening Ears” at Denge, and the steadfast, joyful charm of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, with its beloved miniature locomotives, still one of the area’s most cherished moving landmarks. These references aren’t name-drops; they’re coordinates — the points by which a community recognises itself. And make no mistake, the community of Romney Marsh does recognise itself — proudly, loudly, and with a sense of place that runs deep.

Rooftop Not Rural – (Hands Of Our Marsh)

What makes the Romney Marsh album particularly compelling is the way we’ve built it. With so many musical contributors who gave their time whenever they could, what started as an idea over lunch at the Shepherd and Crook in Burmarsh has, surprisingly, transformed into a cohesive whole. The album features soaring choruses when the horizon calls for them, intimate moments where the story narrows to a single voice, and arrangements that leave room for the place itself to breathe.

Three Quarters Sky

While many modern albums strive for a single, polished identity, Romney Marsh intentionally takes a different path — our path. It embraces the idea that a sound can be created by a collective. Recorded across London, France, and the Cape Verde Islands, the album still feels deeply personal. For The Velvet Voices, that’s the point. This isn’t just the launch of a new album; it’s a celebration of Romney Marsh — its people, its landscape, and its history — and the quiet, everyday effort that transforms life here into something worth hearing. Enjoy.
